it’s not just the drive, it’s the whole story…

Bronze sculptures of a herd of bison on a cobblestone platform in an urban setting, with a tall building in the background and the sun shining through the clouds.

Wanderlust whetted? Our longer adventures focus in 2026 on northern Spain.

Take the ferry to Northern Spain and explore the roads, culture, and unexpected gems of this magical landscape. From the amazing atlantic coast, through the Lord of the Rings-esque Picos de Europa, to the outstanding beauty of its natural parks where you can roam wild like the horses, we’ll take in the scenery, roads less explored, and local flavour of the country along with its gastronomy.

The tour gives more flexibility over the course of the two week adventure, providing a proposed route and guided option each day, which you can chose to join or meet us at the hotel to share your stories over a fantastic meal and amazing local hospitality, while knowing that you’re supported by our Road Stories team.

iberian itinerary…

Chapter 1: The Voyage

13th - 15th September

We start our adventure in Portsmouth, boarding the Ferry to Spain.

Relax on our 2 night mini-cruise across the Bay of Biscay. Stroll the deck, enjoy some dolphin spotting with onboard talks and spotting sessions run by ORCA; Organisation for Responsible Cetacean Awareness, sample the restaurants on board and you can even take in a film at the onboard cinema. The trip across the bay is a wonderful way to get ready for the laid back atmosphere of Northern Spain.

Chapter 2: The Adventure Begins

15th - 16th September

Touring through the Iberian countryside with two nights at each location, we aim to show you the very best of northern Spain and Portugal.

Crossing through the Lord of the Rings-eque Picos Europa national park, to Oviedo and our 4 star hotel which is our base for our first two nights on land. You will see amazing scenery, stunning viewpoints and the incredible hills this area has to offer. There is an visit to the Fernando Alonso museum showcasing some 400 unique pieces from the two-times F1 World champion’s personal collection, or you can explore the birthplace of the F1 legend under your own steam and take in the astounding landscape.

Chapter 3: The Gastronomy

17th - 18th September

We venture northwest to Galicia. The Romans believed Galicia was the end of the earth, with its dramatic coast and lush green valleys. Renowned for its Celtic and Roman heritage, the region is also famed for its gastronomy. We’ll be spending two days exploring this area, stopping for two nights at our 4* spa hotel, taking in the wild Atlantic coast and amazing history of this autonomous region of Spain. Renowned for its food, Galicia is a treasure trove of seafood, delicate local cheeses and local wines.

Chapter 4: Crossing the Border

19th September

We reach our most westerly point of the adventure crossing into northern Portugal - spending the night at a 5* hotel and visiting the UNESCO heritage site of Bom Jesus do Monte and its famous “stairway to Heaven’. This fantastic staircase is a beautiful sight to behold, showcasing the sculpture, painting and ceramics Northern Portugal is famed for in a staircase to the religious sanctuary.

Chapter 5: Local Colour

20th - 21st September

From our stairway to heaven, we then go through the renowned Douro valley and up in to the Serra de Estrela to take in a very special boutique 4* hotel for the next two nights. The characterful hotel, based in the middle of a vineyard, is also a winery, queijaria and stud farm. You can chose to spend your two days taking in local colour at the hotel, where you can do as little or as much as you like; with options to participate in shepherding, wine and cheese tasting from the onsite winery and queijaria, equestrian experiences with their horses, or relax in the spa with a massage, or just enjoy the local colour in the region. There is a group picnic on the second day with local cheese and wine tasting experience run by the hotel’s experts, to take in the most of this wonderful landscape and enjoy the culture of the area.

Chapter 6: Roman Riches

22nd -23rd September

Tearing ourselves away from the peace of the countryside, we move east, to historic Salamanca. Staying for the next two nights in our wonderful 5* hotel, we explore the city at our leisure. Salamanca’s old town is a UNESCO heritage site, rich with roman and Moorish heritage and renaissance delights. Stopping in the city centre, you’ll be able to explore the city’s vibrant culture, gastronomy and magnificent architecture on foot.

Chapter 7: Over the Mountains

24th September

As we head back towards the coast, we cross back in the spectacular mountains of the Picos Europa national park. Seeing the spectacular scenery and spending the night in a boutique hotel. The alpine style houses and scenic passes feel like a whole different world to the lush pastures and vineyards we’ve travelled through to the west.

Chapter 8: The Adventurers Return

25th - 27th September

From the Picos, we make our way back to the sea. The wild Atlantic coast is calling us homewards. We head towards the coast for our last Iberian stop and spend the night in Bilbao, where you can take in the culture of the Guggenheim, tour the city and sample the Pinchos it’s renowned for or drive through the Basque Country, before relaxing into fine dining in our stunning 5* hotel, making the most of our final night in Spain.

We then have a relaxed start on the 26th September to head to the port to voyage home, arriving back on dry land on 27th September with stories to tell….
